Beginners Sewing Classes
The Beginners class
|
This 3 hour class starts at the very beginning. You will learn or revise how to thread and use a sewing machine, fill the bobbin, check thread tension, sew straight and curved seams with correct seam finishes and a balanced tension. We will also do sample button holes, understitching and more.
After this course you will be ready to tackle your first project. See "Bring your own project" classes.

Weekly Sewing Classes
Weekly classes - Bring your own project

This weekly class provides you with assistance and expertise on selecting, patterns, project assembly and how to achieve a professional finish. Weekly classes are a great way to meet people with a similar interest. The class is project based where you choose your own project according to your ability. The class is self paced offering as much or as little assistance as you would like.

All pop-up classes run on a Friday and change regularly. Some pop-ups are include:
Bring your own Project (3 hours)
Start a new project or finish off one of those UFO's. Teacher is there to assist and guide you.
NB: please email your pattern/project to frolicinfabric@gmail.com prior to the class so the teacher can check the project is suitable for the sewers ability and sewing environment.
Make a bag - great for beginners (4 hours)
Make this fabulous reversible tote bag in just 4 hours!
Keep your own pattern so you can make more at home.
Sewing with Knits (3 hours)
This class will teach you the skills required to make a basic knit garment. Skills such as sewing seams with knits, sewing on a binding, sewing a hem and attaching elastic. This course using both an overlocker and a sewing machine.
Introduction to Screen Printing (4 hours)
Learn the basics of screen printing, about types of fabric inks and colour mixing. Design and create your own stencil using special techniques. We will print your original design on a 100% cotton white tea towel. All materials are provided. Total course cost is $90 plus a $35 material fee (including fabric inks, stencil film and printing medium).

We are delighted to welcome Sharon McCartney to the Frolic studio for a fun two mornings making Fofucha Dolls. These dolls are uniquely made by combining foam, heat, fabric, glue, paint, wire, chalk, sparkle and lots of creativity. Don't miss this fun workshop.

Perfect Pants- with Rita Showell

We are delighted to welcome back Rita Showell as a guest tutor to the Frolic studio. With some 30 years experience in the textile industry, Rita is passionate about sharing her knowledge and skills with others.
This fabulous weekend workshop will teach you how to make a pair of pants that fits you perfectly. You will learn how to take body measurements, make pattern adjustments, the importance of the correct grainline and sewing techniques needed for making a pair of pants.
Preparation for Friday night: You will need to bring your pattern and calico for Friday nights class. (this can also be provided in a kit) During this 2 hour session you will prepare your pants pattern based on your measurements and body considerations, ready to make a calico (trial) pants.
Placements are limited with a maximum of 5 students.

Weekend Workshop
Tailor a Jacket - with Rita Showell

This fabulous weekend workshop will teach you how to construct a tailored (or casual) jacket. Using a commercial pattern, you will learn how to fit your jacket, about linings, interfacing, sleeves, collars, trims, hemming and more. We will also assist you in choosing your pattern and fabric prior to the commencement of the workshop. With 30 years experience in the industry of garment construction and dressmaking you will not find a more experienced and passionate teacher as Rita Showell.
You will be asked to prepare a calico (mock) jacket ready for the Friday night class. The Friday night class is all about fit and making any pattern adjustments

5 Week Course
Introduction to Sewing

If you are new to Sewing then this is the course for you. This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of sewing. This includes: Using a sewing machine, tools and equipment, selecting the right fabrics, how to read a pattern, layout and cut of pattern and fabric. You will also learn correct sewing techniques for seams, hems, casings, pockets, gathering and buttonholes. During the course you will make a tote bag and a pair of pyjama pants or shorts.

6 Week Course
Sewing children's clothing

All basic sewing equipment and tools. Bernina sewing machines.

How would you like to make very cute and original clothes for your children? This six week course is designed to teach you the basics of sewing and how to use a commercial pattern to create very fun and cute clothes. Learn techniques such as gathering, pin tucks, buttonholes and binding. We will also touch on some simple embellishment techniques such as applique, embroidery, ribbon and lace decoration and more. During the course you will make at least 2 garments.
